Physical Education

At Aveton Gifford Church of England Primary School, we believe that developing children's confidence, by providing opportunities to be creative, co-operative and competitive as individuals, groups and teams will promote a positive lifelong attitude towards an active and healthy lifestyle.  It will contribute to whole school improvement, both academically and socially to assist in developing every child's potential to be the best that they can be.

The aim of promoting PE and School Sport is to:

  • Increase participation in physical activity both within and outside of the curriculum time.
  • To make all physical activities inclusive to all.
  • To develop self esteem and confidence.
  • To promote positive behaviour and raise attainment.

We are really proud that we have been awarded;

'Schools Games Award - Gold Standard 2018'

We are delighted to announce that we, Aveton Gifford C of E Primary School, have achieved the School Games GOLD Mark Award for the 2017/18 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

With a total of young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

Swimming at Aveton Gifford:

We are very lucky to have an outdoor swimming pool on our premises.  This enables our students to receive regular swimming experiences throughout the Spring and Summer terms. We are very proud that at Aveton Gifford Primary school the pupils have the opportunity to develop their swimming skills through the guidance Mrs Sarah Drew; who is a Nationally qualified swimming teacher and coach.  Therefore, all our pupils will leave Primary School being able to swim at least 25 meters.  We host local swimming galas, which gives a variety of pupils an opportunity to develop their confidence and participation in team events.

  • In 2018 a team were able to compete at Millfield School against other schools from the South West in the English Schools swimming Association Championship.  Where they placed 5th.
  • Each year there is a KS1 and a KS2 Inter-house swimming completion, in which all pupils participate to gain points for their house. The Aveton Gifford Swimming Trophy is thus awarded to the house with the most points.
  • Pupils will have the opportunity to work one to one with a qualified coach in order to improve their technique and confidence.
  • All our pupils also have the opportunity to work towards skill badges in line with the ASA.
