Earthquakes in Aveton Gifford!!

On Monday 3rd February Year 6 children at Aveton GIfford Primary School had the opportunity to work alongside Physicist and Mathematician Dr Nick Woodman.

Dr Woodman, a research scientist and university lecturer with a real passion for science, was able to explain how earthquakes are created and that they can be predicted using mathematics.

Dr Woodman's session inspired the pupils and showed them how their learning in maths and science can be applied to solving real life problems.  Dr Woodman was ably assisted by two 6th Form Students from Kingsbridge Community College and Torquay Boys Grammar School as he shared his love of physics with the children.  He challenged them to use complex mathematical calculations and encouraged them to ask searching questions.  The Year 6 pupils rose to the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed their special lesson,  Who knows perhaps one of them will go on to become a phycisist too!
