Aveton Gifford C of E Primary School has been awarded the Sainbury's Silver School Games Mark which reflects our ongoing commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive sport during the academic year 2015-16.
We are very proud that our provision of competitive sport, that is inclusive to all of our children through sports clubs, sporting festivals and competitions held within school as well as with other schools, has been recognised with this award.
The sun shone on our Sports Day morning activities this year when the team challenges took place. Mr Hilling organised a variety of team events to take place on the school playground from 10.00am until midday. The competition was fierce and by the time the children stopped for lunch the four teams, 'Avon', 'Dart', 'Erme' and 'Yealm' were neck-and-neck with the number of points they had accrued.
The sun hid behind the clouds when the children and staff, now joined by parents and carers, moved the event across to the village playing fields for the individual races but fortunately it didn't rain! The skipping and egg-and-spoon races proved to be a lot of fun both for the children and the adults watching, but one of the highlights of the afternoon had to be the 'Dressing-up' race which saw Henry from Year 6 running down the field in hot pursuit of the children from Egrets, dressed in a skirt and a floppy hat!
Congratulations must go to the green team 'Dart', who stormed ahead on points during the afternoon eventually winning the trophy.
A big thank you to our lovely PTFA ladies for organising the cake sale and refreshments and for supplying the much needed ice-lollies for our tired athletes at the end of the day.
